Cushions, blankets, mattresses, and clothing
Extra-large Ziploc bags can be used for storing blankets, cushions, and out-of-season clothes. By pressing out the air from the bag, then sealing it, it will take up even less space and will be easier to store. For larger items like mattresses, purchase plastic mattress sheets or bags. They keep the dust out and protect against tears. To maintain suits and dresses in pristine condition, it is recommended to use a wardrobe box. They allow for transportation and storage, and keep the items wrinkle free because of their design.
Magazines and books
To ensure you can find the magazine or book you are look for, you can use hanging folders and a filing cabinet. For lighter magazines, you can place them on the hangers with the spine up. Do not forget to put them in an order you understand! If you are placing them in boxes, just remember that magazines can be extremely heavy; make sure you spread them out appropriately.
Paintings and TVs
Stuck on how to protect your precious family portraits? Cardboard TV boxes are your best bet! They are specifically designed with thicker and stronger walls for transportation and storage. Plus, they work for TVs too! Make sure to wrap the paintings/TVs to ensure there are no nicks or scratches.
Dishes
Dishes are always one of the most difficult items to protect for transportation and storage. Pay attention to each size, style, and material. Metal items should be polished to avoid any chance of rust. However, everything must be cleaned and individually wrapped before placing into a box. NEVER let the box get too heavy; even the strongest boxes cannot handle being overloaded.
Furniture
Carefully dismantle the furniture, separating the nuts and bolts into labelled bags. Taping them directly to the underside helps too. Do not forget to wrap the edges to protect them.
Cord Storage
To keep cords organized, slide them into toilet paper or paper towel tubes. Write the type of cord on the outside of the paper tube. When you need them again, it will be quick and easy to find them.
Most important of all
Label every box! Create a list of what belongs in each box and make two copies – one to be kept with the items, the other to be kept at home. Place heavier items on the bottom of the box, with light and fragile items on top. Be careful never to overload a box – it can damage the items inside and can cause the box to break, spilling all your contents out! To strengthen a box, seal every box with proper packing tape – it is stronger and lasts longer.
