Checklist: preparing to teach English overseas
Congratulations! You made the life-changing decision to teach English overseas. Your new adventure will be a huge change from living in the Guelph or the Greater Toronto Area. After you have your TEFL certification and a destination selected, there’s a lot to do before you begin your long journey from Ontario, Canada. From getting an affordable storage unit to cancelling your cell phone contract, here’s a checklist to help you feel assured and secure before you head into adventure.
Sort your stuff
Whether you will be gone for a year or five years, there will be belongings that you will want to throw away, donate and keep in a secure storage unit. After a long trip overseas, you wouldn’t want the extra expense of buying all new appliances, warm clothes and furniture, so it is important to find a clean and secure storage unit for the stuff you want to keep. Your Aunt June’s garage may seem tempting as a storage option, but unless she offers 24/7 surveillance, climate control and individualized security, we can’t be so sure that your carefully selected belongings will still be intact upon your return.

Store your vehicle
Storing your vehicle during your overseas adventure is a wise decision. Depending on which country you will be working in, and how much traveling you want to do there, you may not have extra funds or good enough credit, to re-purchase a car. By storing your vehicle, you will know exactly where it will be and how much you need to budget for it’s safe keeping.
Climate-controlled vehicle storage with periodic maintenance will ensure your vehicle stays in great working condition for your return to Canada. Again, you can opt for a family member’s garage, but if you prefer 24/7 security and experienced staff on hand to maintain your vehicle, we recommend using an affordable, clean and safe self storage option.
Cancelling phone, internet and cable services
This may seem like a no-brainer, but moving overseas to teach English is very exciting and the small stuff can be easily forgotten. Mobile phone, internet and cable providers usually have a requirement that you provide notice of your contract cancellation, this can be 30 to 60 days. Also, if you are in a cell phone contract that will be ended prematurely, you may have to pay a cancellation fee. The sooner you touch base with your communications service providers, the better. It will most likely be the most cost effective to cancel your cell phone contract in Canada and pick up a new SIM card in the country you will be living in. You may have to unlock your cell phone before doing so, again something to bring up with your provider when you are notifying them of service cancellation.
Before you go overseas it is advisable to store expensive electronics like TVs, computers, and phones in a secure, climate-controlled self storage unit.
