Temperature is an important factor to consider when choosing a secure storage unit in Ontario.  There is no doubt that heated storage boasts several benefits, but how do you know when you really need it? Are climate controlled storage units necessary or can you get by with storing your stuff in ever-changing temperatures and humidity?

The seasonal pendulum affects everything it touches in Southwestern Ontario and The Greater Toronto Area, storage units are no exception.  Let’s ask, and answer, a few questions to help get you off the fence when choosing to control the climate of your storage unit or not.

What are you storing?

Wooden furniture, electronics, collectibles, photographs, and leather are among items that need climate controlled storage. Why? Because climate control not only manages the temperature but also the humidity of the storage unit.  Metals oxidize, wood warps, leather cracks and paper items will fade and discolour when exposed to high levels of humidity. How long are you using storage?

It is important to be realistic when asking yourself how long your belongings will be in storage.  The temperature of the inside of a storage unit will not be the same in the spring as it is in the height of summer or dead of winter. Think ahead and take all of the seasons into consideration that will happen while your precious cargo is secure in your storage unit.  If you are unsure of how long you will be using the storage unit, it is strongly advised to opt for climate control from the beginning or ask the storage company to remind you of the climate control upgrade after a certain period of time.

What’s your budget?

We all want to save a few bucks where we can, and this affects the decisions we make when choosing a storage unit. Yes, there will be a cost difference between climate controlled storage and not, but it is important to take the answers to the previous questions into consideration when making the final choice.  If you are storing items that are sensitive to temperature and humidity, it will not be cost effective to forgo climate control if your stored belongings end up damaged.
