Holiday to do’s

As the holiday season fast approaches, we are all making everything sparkle for company dropping in. Time to put away spring coats and bring the winter ones out as well as all  the paraphernalia that goes with them. Before storing anything, its a good idea to remove stains before they set in. This will ensure that when you take them out in the spring they will be in great condition. Move any spring /summer/fall items to a storage area. Winter is when we spend more time inside and the extra space will be greatly appreciated later.

Storing Winter Clothing

Storing winter clothing can be a daunting task, but ever more
daunting is trying to find everything when that first snowfall comes.

A few extra minutes now will really pay off later. Wash mittens or gloves and let
air dry. Take each pair and clip them together with a clothespin or elastic. Remove
the lining of the boot and wash, while they are drying, thoroughly clean the outer shell.
When dry, string them together with the laces. To remove salt stains, place white
vinegar onto a clean cloth and gently rub the boot. Wash all washable coats or send
them to the drycleaner before storing to prevent stains from setting in. Label all items
according to size and pack away in a sealed container with a dryer sheet or a package
of silica gel.

Summer Vacation checklist

When you plan a holiday from home, there are a few things you should do before you go.
1. Turn your hot water heater down or to “vacation”.
2. Turn up your air conditioner (you don’t need to cool an empty house).
3. Purchase a couple of timers to put on table lamps, for security.
4. If you can, bolt your garage door from the inside.
5. Ask a neighbor to collect your mail.
6. Cancel any newspapers.
7. Unplug any unneeded electrical appliances. Computers, radios, televisions and etc..(they draw energy even when not being used)

Storing Holiday Ornaments

Christmas and other holiday ornaments can be stored without too
much expense or difficulty

Take a plastic storage bin and line it with a piece of cardboard on the bottom. Glue
paper cups onto the cardboard in a variety of sizes to accommodate your decorations.
Place each ornament into the individual cups and cover with another piece of cardboard.
Label each plastic storage container and store until needed.

Do you really know who you’re storing with?

The Self Storage Industry is going through a number of changes. The influx of new Self Storage owners has increased significantly in the past few years, forcing some Storage providers to be a little more creative with their business practices.

Knowing the difference between the good guys and the not so reputable is very important. Visit the Storage facility you are interested in and view the surroundings.

  • Are they a member of the Self Storage Association?
  • Are the units clean? Individually alarmed?
  • Is there someone living onsite?
  • Is the lot completely surrounded by fencing? (In good condition).
  • Are the client representatives knowledgeable?
  • Are the hallways lit up?
  • Are there security cameras?
  • Is it temperature controlled?
  • Do they offer insurance on your possessions?

The list could go on and on.

The bottom line is – do your homework before trusting your valuables to just anyone.
