Selfstor Tip for December

Keep your Christmas tree well watered and always double check any candles left unattended during a party. Extinguish a fire in the fireplace before retiring to bed at night and put the glass doors on securely. A little extra care can save a life.

Getting ready for winter

Clean, dry and store away yard furniture. Remove dead annuals, weeds and cut back perennials. Turn the gardens and add a blanket of compost. Your plants will love the extra warmth and nutrients for the winter. Turn off the outside water, drain the hoses, roll them up and put them inside, away from the cold temperatures. This will prolong their life. Check the eaves for leaves that can clog up your downspouts. Replace any outside light bulbs. Do any touch up maintenance on the house that would allow water to creep in.

Holiday to do’s

As the holiday season fast approaches, we are all making everything sparkle for company dropping in. Time to put away spring coats and bring the winter ones out as well as all  the paraphernalia that goes with them. Before storing anything, its a good idea to remove stains before they set in. This will ensure that when you take them out in the spring they will be in great condition. Move any spring /summer/fall items to a storage area. Winter is when we spend more time inside and the extra space will be greatly appreciated later.

Storing Winter Clothing

Storing winter clothing can be a daunting task, but ever more
daunting is trying to find everything when that first snowfall comes.

A few extra minutes now will really pay off later. Wash mittens or gloves and let
air dry. Take each pair and clip them together with a clothespin or elastic. Remove
the lining of the boot and wash, while they are drying, thoroughly clean the outer shell.
When dry, string them together with the laces. To remove salt stains, place white
vinegar onto a clean cloth and gently rub the boot. Wash all washable coats or send
them to the drycleaner before storing to prevent stains from setting in. Label all items
according to size and pack away in a sealed container with a dryer sheet or a package
of silica gel.

Fall Preparation

During the fall season we often marvel at the colour and beauty of
the season, but there are a few things we should do to make our transition into winter
a smooth one.
  • Rotate your mattress and vacuum it at the same time.
  • Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Remove window air conditioning units, drain and dry to preserve its lifespan.
  • If removing screens from windows, spray gently with a hose and dry.
  • Check around windows for cracks and caulk if needed.
  • Remove leaves and debris from eves troughs.

Selfstor Tip for October

Salt stains – use equal parts vinegar & water. Rub salt stains gently with a clean cloth dipped into the vinegar mixture.
Floor cleaner – add 1/2 cup of vinegar to your bucket of warm water, this mixture can also be used to clean windows.
Clean the dishwasher – Add a cup of vinegar to an empty dishwasher cycle once a month to reduce build up.
Coffee & Tea pot stains and build up – Add 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water. Boil the Teapot & Run the coffee brew. Followed by 2 straight water brews.

Summer Vacation checklist

When you plan a holiday from home, there are a few things you should do before you go.
1. Turn your hot water heater down or to “vacation”.
2. Turn up your air conditioner (you don’t need to cool an empty house).
3. Purchase a couple of timers to put on table lamps, for security.
4. If you can, bolt your garage door from the inside.
5. Ask a neighbor to collect your mail.
6. Cancel any newspapers.
7. Unplug any unneeded electrical appliances. Computers, radios, televisions and etc..(they draw energy even when not being used)

Self Stor tip for June

When June arrives everyone is more than ready to head outside. Do a bolt and screw tighten of all the items that have stood dormant for the winter. Bicycles, lawnmowers, wagons etc… You might want to check the air in the tires and add a little oil to any blades and chains. Do a walk around the outside of your property and look for any wear and tear that happened over the winter. A small problem can get big quickly. Check the eaves for leaf build-up and the hoses for cracks and worn washers. Taking a day to get organized will save you time and money in the future.

Storing Holiday Ornaments

Christmas and other holiday ornaments can be stored without too
much expense or difficulty

Take a plastic storage bin and line it with a piece of cardboard on the bottom. Glue
paper cups onto the cardboard in a variety of sizes to accommodate your decorations.
Place each ornament into the individual cups and cover with another piece of cardboard.
Label each plastic storage container and store until needed.
